Pet Microchipping

When a pet becomes lost, a microchip can substantially increase the chances that they will be found. The staff at Animal Medical Center of Troy highly recommends this simple and quick procedure.

A tiny microchip is implanted under the skin between the dog’s or cat’s shoulder blades (other animals, such as horses, ferrets, and most mammals, can also be microchipped). The microchip contains an identification number that a scanner can read. The chip can be read by a veterinarian’s office or an animal shelter to determine who owns the animal.

When your pet is microchipped, your veterinarian will ask for your current contact information, which will be entered into a national database. Your name, address, and phone number will be permanently linked to the unique 15-digit number on your pet’s microchip, allowing you to be contacted instantly if your pet is missing and is scanned for a microchip.
